Η πόλη του Βόλου από την ένταξή της στο ελληνικό κράτος έως σήμερα έχει γνωρίσει πολλαπλές αφίξεις και αναχωρήσεις. Οι μουσουλμάνοι κάτοικοί της αναχώρησαν διασχίζοντας της 2ας Νοεμβρίου και μερικές δεκαετίες αργότερα οι πρόσφυγες από την Μικρά Ασία διέσχιζαν την 2ας Νοεμβρίου κατευθυνόμενοι προς τα εργοστάσια και το λιμάνι της πόλης. Ακολούθησαν στα ίδια δρομολόγια οι εσωτερικοί μετανάστες στα πρώτα μεταπολεμικά χρόνια, ενώ σήμερα τα ίδια ακριβώς βήματα ακολουθούν οι πληθυσμοί από την Αλβανία, την Ανατολική Ευρώπη και τον Παγκόσμιο Νότο.
